News Trend: Met Ball 2014

FOLLOWING last year's sojourn into the world of punk, this year's Met Ball saw its star guests return to a more glamorous dress code.

With the museum celebrating the opening of its exhibition dedicated to couturier Charles James, many embraced old school elegance in the most romantic of dresses. The result was a sea of ballgowns sweeping down the red carpet on the likes of co-chair Sarah Jessica Parker, Karolina Kurkova, Katie Holmes, Karlie Kloss, Taylor Swift, Claire Danes and Suki Waterhouse.

For those looking for something a little edgier, a number of trends emerged. Cropped tops, offering a hint of midriff, teamed with a long skirt were worn by Emma Stone, Rihanna and Anne Hathaway, whilst berry-hued lips proved to be a beauty favourite (see 50 of the night's best beauty looks here). Blake Lively, Marion Cotillard, Beyoncé, Gisele, Leighton Meester and Jessica Alba all showed off plunging necklines edging towards the navel - yet kept the look erring on the side of sophisticated.

Meanwhile a number of designers stood out as the night's favourites: Stella McCartney arrived flanked by an all-star group, all dressed in bespoke versions of her designs - Reese Witherspoon, Cara Delevingne, Rihanna and Kate Bosworth. Oscar de la Renta's feminine signature gowns were in abundance - seen on Parker, Swift, Kloss, Danes, Allison Williams and Amy Adams. Miuccia Prada worked her magic for Lupita Nyong'o, Margot Rob bie, Elizabeth Olsen and Dianna Agron - all of whom arrived dressed in bespoke Prada or Miu Miu creations.
